Between a post in the Sunday Times a few days ago about IVF clinics shutting down because sperm donors are not willing to donate unless they can maintain their anonymity and an article today in the Boston Globe about the ethical considerations of egg donations (Women who donate eggs have to take drugs that hyperstimulate the ovaries and undergo minor surgery; this puts them at risk for side effects, yet there is no immediate benefit to them or anyone else -- an uneasy and probably unprecedented combination), it's interesting that donors of both sexes are protesting. This poses an interesting dilemma and suggests that we perhaps need to seek stem cells from other places.
